Onslow-Cole achieves first BTCC pole position of career Tom Onslow-Cole has achieved the first HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship pole position of his career in qualifying at Donington Park. The 20-year-old from New Malden, Surrey set the pole with a best lap of 1m12.140s in his Vauxhall Vectra VXR.
Onslow-Cole said: "I'm back in the rebuilt car which I crashed at Brands Hatch in March and it's running really well. This is one of my favourite circuits and being fastest in both opening sessions sets me up well for the weekend."
However, Jason Plato then went on to give a diesel-powered car - SEAT's Leon TDI - a first ever win in the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship with victory in the first of the three rounds at the Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire.
In an incident-packed race that required two safety car periods, Plato took the lead off Vauxhall driver Tom Onslow-Cole in the closing stages for his first win of 2008.
Finishing second and third were the Vauxhall Vectra VXRs of Matt Neal and Onslow-Cole.
In race 2 Vauxhall VXR drvier Fabrizio Giovanardi won to increase his lead in the series. Race one winner Jason Plato finished second in his SEAT Leon TDI ahead of Giovanardi's team-mate Tom Onslow-Cole in third.
Race 3 was then won by Darren Turner in a SEAT Leon TDI, he led every lap although came under increasing pressure from the closing Vauxhall Vectra VXR of Tom Onslow-Cole in the final stages.
Onslow-Cole, who set the race's fastest lap, finished second ahead of SEAT's Jason Plato and his own Vauxhall team-mate Fabrizio Giovanardi.
