Trail blazers

If you’re heading off-road, which of these trail shoes will keep you on the right track?

Keen Ochoco - £94.99
The sturdiest pair on test offers plenty of protection around the toe. They're a bit clumpy, so they're better suited to hiking than to running, and they struggle in the wet - run through water and you'll feel like you're wearing vintage diving boots.

Nike Air Trail Pegasus+ III Clima - £105

These look and feel like road-running trainers, with generous cushioning and flexibility. The comfort level is high, they drain well and the iPod compatibility is a bonus, but the lack of protection means they're best suited to gentle trails.

The North Face DIAD Boa - £75
The neat Boa lacing system means that you can adjust the fit swiftly but the dial at the back can dig into your heel. The pared-down design makes the shoes feel like sporty sandals but the big advantage is that they drain in seconds.

Puma Complete Trailfox II - £60
The narrow shape keeps your foot in place and reduces blistering when you run over uneven surfaces, and the cushioned sole will protect you over rocks and stones. Extra protection is limited to the toe to keep this quick drying shoe light and fast.

Raichle All-Degree Low XCR - £90
A robust pair that are heavy duty without being too heavy. The main problem is that they bend sharply at the knuckle of your big toe, rather than curving gradually, which is uncomfortable. Wear them when protection is more important than speed.

Salomon XA Pro 3D XCR - £85
Great all-round shoes that grip the foot and give you a comfortable ride. There's solid protection at the toe but they're light enough for you to set a swift pace. The quick-pull laces make them easy to get on and off, so they're ideal for adventure racing.
