Storm Shield Raptor
£24.99

The Storm Shield is a good-quality multi-tool at an affordable price. One niggle is that the blades don’t lock in place, although thankfully they’re designed in such a way that they won’t close in on themselves when you’re trying to use them. They’re also made of tough stainless steel, as are the all-important bottle opener and corkscrew.

Gerber Suspension
£35

The Gerber is a solid piece of kit that punches far above its price bracket. Its open-frame design – apparently inspired by the bridges of Oregon – looks good and core functions such as blades and saws work well. One gripe is that the locking system and scissors can be slightly fiddly.

Leatherman Wave
£89.99

Unsurprisingly, this bestselling model is streets (possibly even muddy tracks) ahead. Aside from being exceptionally user-friendly, it’s solid and sturdy, with strong locking blades, tough pliers and easily the most convincing saw of the lot. The price is high but if you’re planning to use it regularly it’s a sound investment.
