Quiksilver Someone - £70
This is a good watch for the occasional jogger who wants something that will pass muster as a fashion watch as well. There’s no stopwatch or backlight but it’s robust and waterproof.

Casio STR-800 - £79.99
It’s got all the gizmos you could ask for – 500-lap memory, countdown timer, stopwatch – but it can be awkward to use on the move, and it lacks the sophisticated looks of other watches.

Adidas LS RP - £39.95
Light and comfortable thanks to the holes in the strap that keep your wrist cool and dry. The price is great and even techno-dunces will find it easy to use. It stores only ten lap times, though.

Umbro UO67 - £30
Although it’s designed for footballers, this has all the basic functions for running at a great price. It’s light, easy to use and ideal for runners who don’t need a lap-counter.

Timex Sleek OVA - £49.99
You wear this innovative watch on the side of your wrist, not the back, so it’s far easier to see the display without breaking stride. Expect all sports watches to be designed this way soon

Oakley D2 - £99
It looks futuristic but it’s not easy to use on the run, and it feels a bit bulky. The display, however, is very clear, and it can store 100 lap times and display two lap times simultaneously.

Nike Triax Speed 100 Super - £59.99
When you’re pumping your arms, you still want to be able to see your times easily. This watch’s display is big, clear and angled so you don’t have to turn your wrist. It also stores an impressive 100 lap times.
