The North Face Men’s Ultra Gore-Tex XCR
Many of the ideal features of a good trail shoe are present here: a comfortable upper, combined with a good grip and plenty of toe protection. This would conquer the toughest trails with ease and is certainly a safe buy. It’s also one of the springiest on test, which will make it comfortable on long races

La Sportiva Exum Ridge - £59.95
The La Sportiva shoe is excellent value for money. The support of the foot in the upper is good and it seems pretty tough. There’s less arch support and internal comfort than on some others but it’s a sensible shoe at a sensible price, and a top buy for novice runners who aren’t sure if trail running is for them.

Merrell Pursuit Shield Gore-Tex XCR - £80
A robust shoe for runners who like a good deal of support on the uppers. Speed merchants might find these a bit cumbersome, and the uppers at the back are a little high – on a long-distance trail race they would need to be modified with a penknife to prevent the ankles rubbing. But it’s tough and a safe buy.

Salomon XA Pro 3D XCR - £80
The Salomon is by far the best buy here. The grip on the sole is excellent, the lacing system is superior, the toe protection is superb, and they have sufficient spring. The striking pillar-box red design also means you won’t go missing on the hills, as mountain rescue would see you from miles away.

Puma Complete Thiella XCR II - £85
This is one of the most comfortable shoes on test. There isn’t much support or toe protection in the upper part, which could be a problem on really tough, punishing trails. However, it’s good-looking with a simple design and good waterproof protection.

Teva Romero - £60
This is well made with plenty of support and cushioning. It’s not very heavy either, so it feels less clumpy than one or two of the other more robust shoes. It’s also reasonably priced, which is important for seriously committed trail runners, who could find themselves wearing out several pairs of shoes a year.

Adidas Wanaka TR GTX XCR - £79
These are strong and breathable with a good grip on the soles, although the stiffness of the upper may be uncomfortable for some. As with several of the others here, the toe protection is not great. Adidas’ sizing method means you may need to buy a pair a size bigger than you normally wear.
