Snowboards
Board meeting

This season's coolest snowboards for both budding and pro piste artists

All-mountain boards
As the name suggests, these boards are designed to go anywhere whether it's through powder or a pipe.

Park/pipe board
The extreme cousin of freestyle boards, this type is specialised for when you just have to pull that frontside 540.

Freeride boards
Best suited to powder and off-piste riding.

Freestyle boards
Light, manoeuvrable and easy to spin, these boards are adaptable enough to handle different obstacles and will ride regular or switch with ease.

All boards picked from the Helly Hansen Board Test 2003 (www.hellyhansen.com) in Austria. Hosts included Tirol Tourist Board (www.tyrol.com), Neustift Tourist Board (call +43 5226 2228), the Stubai Glacier (www.stubaier-gletscher.com) and SNOWBOARD magazine.

The Helly Hansen Board Test takes place every year on a glacier in Europe in late May. For further info email dcmt@fall-line.co.uk.

Nitro Punisher - £255
Beginner to intermediate
The perfect first buy for beginners. This is stable at high speed (if a little heavy), but most importantly it will give you lots of fun no matter where you take it.

Option Sansalone - £379
Intermediate to advanced
Keeps you in full control, and is forgiving when your landings are less than perfect. Stiff enough for backcountry riding but soft enough for rails.

Wild Duck Vertical - £259-£279
Advanced
A stiff board that loves the deep stuff. You won't be pulling any tricks, but you can plough along at speed in a straight line. Nice price too.

K2 Recon Riser - £399.99
Intermediate to advanced
Provides extreme amounts of leverage so you can carve through corners at frightening speeds. It's the boarding equivalent of a roller-coaster ride.

Rome Metal - £380
Intermediate to advanced
Lots of sidecut helps you carve hard up pipe walls and if you pop hard off the rear you'll stay airborne long enough to earn frequent flier points.

Burton T6 - £459.95
Intermediate to advanced
Uses up-to-the-minute technology and materials to create a ride that is light, fast and responsive. It'll burn a big hole in your pocket, though.

Flow Budo - £219.99
Intermediate
A good, sturdy entry-level board at a value-for-money price. Very soft flex and great for razzing around and generally having fun.
