Dynastar Speed SX63 - £225
Speed freaks
From the same stable as Dynastar's race skis, these will stay rock solid when the landscape starts to get blurry.

Head Cyber i.C160 - £280
Your first upgrade
When you realise that hire skis just won't cut it any more, you're ready to try these. All the performance you want with the control you'll definitely need.

Salomon Scream 8 Pilot - £429 inc bindings
Heading off-piste
Sooner or later you have to leave the bosom of the well-groomed piste and venture into uncharted territory. These will hold your hand all the way.

Rossignol Scratch FS - £275
Flash Harrys
If you don't find yourself fully inverted at some point during your run, then you're not using these skis to their full potential.

Volkl T50 Supersport 5 Star - £499.90 inc bindings
Doing anything
Push this plank as hard as you like - you won't find a fault with it on any terrain in any conditions.

A Snowboards Blink - £199.99
Beginners
If you're on a budget then you can't do better than the Blink, which will cruise through the turns and inspire confidence in anyone venturing off-piste for the first time (whether intentionally or not).

Nitro Atlas - £309
Bigfoots
It's a common problem - the toes of your size 11s stick over the edge of your board and interfere with your smooth carving. The answer is a wide board and this is the one we recommend whether you like to pose in the powder or pound down the pistes.

Burton Code - £365.95
Cunning stunts
If you like to spend your time in the park practising your heelside rodeo flips and switch backside 540s, then the Code will bring a mixture of grace and power to your moves. If you don't know what the hell we're on about then you'd probably be better off choosing something else.

Ride Timeless - £349.99
Doing anything
Super-light and packed with technical innovations (too many to go into here) this board is fast, responsive and, most important, bloody good fun to ride in any situation. We even like the graphics.
