Who do I see about my back?

I suffer from lower back pain. Who would be the best person to see about it: a chiropractor, an osteopath or a physiotherapist?

Whether you visit a chiropractor, osteopath or physiotherapist for your back, they will manipulate your spine in order to adjust the small joints between the bones. The aim is to relieve pain and stiffness by using short, sharp movements to push a joint slight further than it would usually move. See which one your GP recommends, and ask around to see if you can speak to a friend or colleague who has tried any of these types of therapy. Whichever you go for, though, it’s vital that you choose a therapist who is qualified, registered and experienced in giving this sort of treatment.

The best way to cope with back pain is to stay active, rather than lie down for days on end. You’ve probably heard this before, but once you’ve recovered you can also strengthen your back muscles and prevent further injury by lifting heavy objects correctly – keep your back straight and bend at the knees.
