What should I look out for?

Catching male cancer early will increase your chances of beating the disease.

I've heard a lot about male cancer recently and was wondering how common it really is and what symptoms I should be looking out for?
Steve Cloud, by email

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK and testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15-45 years. All men should check themselves regularly and keep an eye out for any of the following symptoms:

  • A lump in either testicle
  • Any enlargement of a testicle
  • A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum
  • A dull ache in the abdomen or groin
  • A sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum
  • Enlargement or tenderness of the breasts

  • Difficulty in urinating
  • Delays in urinating
  • Stopping and starting urinating
  • A weak stream of urine
  • Urinating more often than usual
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pain and stiffness in the lower back and hips

If you have any of these symptoms, go and see your doctor. It's something that should not be taken lightly.
