I know I should do more squats and deadlifts, but I find they hurt my back, even though IÕm very careful about my form. What should I do instead?

Jason Anderson replies: All of us do some form of squatting and deadlifting every day because we use these movements to pick things up and move them around. So why do we then have problems in the gym?
It's because we prefer to use one side of our bodies over the other. We automatically create small and accumulative imbalances, which are shown up when we try to lift an unusually heavy load. A good alternative to conventional squatting and deadlifting is to use the split stance, where you stand with one leg in front of the other. This can be performed in all directions, which makes it far more functional, and it alleviates most of the risks associated with body imbalances and excessive loads. Start by lifting your own bodyweight to develop flexibility and strength, then increase the challenge with some light dumb-bells. If you still experience pain, you should consult a specialist.
