Fitness: Ask The Experts

Fitness
Will a holiday derail my race training?

There's not need to feel guilty if you take a break from your training program. Our fitness expert explains why

I’m in training for a triathlon in three months. I want to take a two-week holiday but I’m worried that this will set back my training. How long a break can I take without losing fitness?
Simon Jones, Winchester

Matt Hart answers: Studies have shown that endurance or cardiovascular fitness can drop dramatically after a two-week break from exercise, although strength performance will remain relatively unchanged. Excess alcohol, strange food and late nights obviously all take their toll on your body too. But don’t worry because the body very quickly remembers the fitness level it used to have and within a week or two of dedicated training you’ll be back where you want to be. Your three-month goal is far enough away for you not to worry unduly. Enjoy your holiday, but perhaps make some time for a few runs and some swimming.
