Is my fruit and veg full of chemical?

The importance of washing fruit and veg before eating

I know I should wash fruit and veg before I eat it, but most of the time I can't be bothered. Am I really at risk from anything?
J Whelan, by email

Dr Sarah Schenker, nutrionist answers: Washing fruit and veg removes any surface contaminants such as pesticides and fertiliser residue, both chemical and natural, so you should always wash it whether it's organic or conventionally grown. Also, most of it has been stored in warehouses, travelled in containers and stored again in the premises of the retailers, so there's added risk of contamination from dust, dirt and bacteria.

The risk of food poisoning from eating unwashed fruit is minimal but getting into the habit of washing-and, where appropriate, peeling-all fruit and vegetables is simple good hygienic practice.
