Dr Rob Hicks replies: Gas production is a normal part of digestion, when bacteria and enzymes break down food in the gut. High-fibre foods, spicy foods, Brussels sprouts and cabbage and pulses (beans, peas and lentils) are powerful gas-producing foods, as is beer. Cutting down on these and eating more slowly, chewing food more and not gulping down drinks helps improve food digestion and reduces the amount of air swallowed into the gut.
Having a probiotic yogurt or supplement every day aids digestion by providing the gut with good bacteria and helps to reduce gas. Peppermint tea or capsules may help or try adding herbs that aid digestion to meals, such as fennel, sage or thyme.
Regular exercise prevents the build up of wind, allowing it to disperse easily. Remedies are available from chemists to help control excess wind, too.
If the problem persists he should see a doctor as IBS or a gut infection may be the cause.
