Ann Turner from the Migraine Action Association replies: A migraine is a complex neurological condition that can have a huge impact on your quality of life. Symptoms include intense throbbing headache, usually on one side of the head, sensitivity to light, sound and smells, nausea, vomiting and visual disturbances. Attacks can be triggered by many things, including bright lights, lack of food, dehydration, overtiredness, stress and even the weather.
Track down the causes of your attacks by keeping a diary. Over-the-counter painkillers can help if you take them early. If these aren't working, effective treatments are available from your GP, including a range of drugs known as triptans that can relieve all symptoms within two hours. If attacks are occurring frequently preventative medication, taken daily, can also be prescribed. It is possible to reduce the number of attacks by making sure you eat frequently, drink plenty of water and keep stress levels down.
