Fitness: Ask The Experts

Is it safe to have my ears pinned back?

My ears stick out. I know that children can have them pinned back while they're still developing, but is it possible to do the same for grown adults?

Dr Rob Hicks replies: It is possible for adults with bat ears (this is an acceptable medical term and not a term of abuse) to have them surgically corrected. The operation is called 'pinnaplasty' or 'otoplasty' and although not necessary for physical health reasons it is often performed when the appearance of the ears is causing emotional distress.
The operation adjusts the shape of the cartilage within the ear either by cutting the cartilage or by scraping some of it away. This makes the cartilage less springy and allows the ear to lie closer to the side of the head. The operation can be done under local or general anaesthetic and is often performed as a day case.
