Fitness: Ask The Experts

Why do my nails have white marks on them?

My nails have white marks on them. Is this an indication of a lack of calcium?

Dr Rob Hicks replies: Many people believe that white spots on the nails are related to calcium or other nutritional deficiencies, but this is not the case. These spots are the result of minor traumas to the nails, the bumps and bangs that happen every day usually without us even noticing. The spots will grow out with the nail. If you want to avoid getting any more try wearing gloves when doing activities where the nails are more likely to get knocked, for example DIY or playing sport.
