Fitness: Ask The Experts

How can I warm up indoors more quietly?

Before my home workout I warm up with jumps and running on the spot, but my neighbour downstairs has complained. Is there an effective way of warming up indoors, without equipment, that doesn't involve pounding on the floor?

Magnus Bowden, Cannons' gym development manager, replies: One way to reduce the complaints is to try and keep at least one foot on the floor at all times while warming up to reduce the noise. You only need a few minutes of moving and stretching to raise your heart rate and prepare your body for more vigorous exercise. Then, when you move on to your muscle-building workout, perform one or two sets of each exercise with a lighter weight first before upping the intensity. This way, your muscles will be warmed up and ready for the shock they're about to receive.
If your neighbour still complains about the noise during your workout, try getting some padded mats to dampen the din - or simply ignore them. They'll just have to turn the TV up.
