It is the clichéd, somewhat boring rhetoric that has pervaded the pub, lounge and terrace scene of the football fan since the beautiful game’s very inception. It is the banded around ‘informal’ in-game bet chat.
We all do it - cockily caw that ‘this free kick's going nowhere’ safe in the knowledge we’re not losing any money if we’re wrong - the sole punishment simply looking like a bit of a pratt in front of the few mates that actually still listen to our cynical footy observations.
Well, times are a-changing folks. Now all your pals guilty of bending your ear with their relentless ‘Told you… told you that would happen!’ drivel can finally be dared to put their money where their mouth is. And boy is it fun witnessing the results.
Let us introduce you then, to our new friends at ZonePlay. When these kind fellows sent us over to Barcelona to test drive their new in game betting system we assumed they wanted some of Maxim’s famous football insight, but seemingly they were just after some impressionable lads who’d embrace this new form of gambling like Charlie Sheen to a lawsuit.
And embrace it we did – sat high up in the footballing mecca that is
the Nou Camp, our accounts loaded with enough to make a tidy little sum
for ourselves - all it would take was the administering of a bit of patience, logic and luck.
Sadly,
we had little luck, less patience and most of our logic failed us. Not
to say it was a total disaster, we still came home with something –
though casting envious glances at other members of our party who had
fared alot better and were leaving with enough money for some well
earned paella and San Miguels later on.
Unlike many other instant forms of gambling, ZonePlay's actually a right laugh. Playing it well or playing it badly, finishing up or finishing down. Never has the ball being ballooned out for a throw in given you such a smug grin (having just put a fiver on it at 7-1) or have you shouted so loud for a free kick on the halfway line - that has no real relevance on the game but equates to a few more quid in the skyrocket.
The rules of the game are easy enough. As you’d expect, the odds change depending on where the ball is in play and bets are placed simply by clicking on a zone. Obviously factors and characteristics of various teams are taken into account as well. You’d get slightly worse odds on Stoke scoring from a throw in than any other side for example, or Ronaldo scoring from a free-kick as opposed to Jermaine Jenas.
For the degenerate gamblers out there, salivating at the prospect of
such instantaneous betting but sweating at the potential damage it could
do to their family’s joint account – thankfully there is a play for fun
option affectionately named ‘Table Play” where you can challenge your mates for the spoils of £150.
As an added incentive, Buzz Sports are giving away £20,000 in prizes on the free play version between now and the end of the football season.
On that note - we must dash, our accounts are back in the green and Triklaka v Giannina’s on in five. Cashback.
