Jeff Stelling’s World Cup XI
Being an Englishman myself, how can you pick a World Cup XI and not have Geoff Hurst in it. He scored a few goals in a final once, didn't he?
1 Gordon Banks (England, GK)
“England's greatest ever goalkeeper who made the greatest ever save from Pele. A shoo-in.”
2 Cafu (Brazil, RB)
“Most capped Brazilian, played in numerous World Cups and made hundreds of overlapping runs every match. So exciting to watch.”
3 Paolo Maldini (Italy, LB)
“14 years as an Italian international, incredible athlete and an absolute legend.”
4 Bobby Moore (England, CB)
“Has
to be in the side. I can't see anybody not putting him in. He's not just one of the
greatest players ever, but also one of the greatest blokes. Truly one
of the lads.”
5 Daniel Passarella (Argentina, CB)
“Argentina's captain from 1978. There's going to be a few leaders in this team, but in a class Argentinian side that won the World Cup he was immense. Completes what I'd call a 'pretty solid back line...'”
6 Alan Ball (England, CM)
“Hugely underrated, inspirational, motivational, Duracell-batteries-in-his-back midfield workhorse who was just brilliant.”
7 Alain Giresse (France, CM)
“Between him and Platini and [Jean] Tigana they absolutely oozed French class. Smooth, subtle, deft, creative and utter geniuses.”
8 Michel Platini (France, CM)
“See Giresse! But Platini also scored loads. He's not so great now! But in his day, everybody loved him...”
9 Roger Milla (Cameroon, FW)
“A massive character. He was 38 in 1990, scored four goals in the World Cup Finals and even managed a great little dance around the corner flag. And, let's not forget, he came back to the World Cup four years later and scored another goal when he was 42. One of the first truly memorable African footballers.”
10 Geoff Hurst (England, FW)
"Being an Englishman myself, how can you pick a World Cup XI and not have Geoff Hurst in it. He scored a few goals in a final once, didn't he?"
11 Eusebio (Portugal, FW)
"He features in some of my earliest memories of the game. He was just a fantastic player. In an era where opponents used to kick lumps out of skillful players, he still remained untouchable. He was just too good for them.”
