World Cup Gatecrashers XI

Despite missing out on the last England squad, these promising upstarts will be hoping to sneak onto the plane for South Africa. But what are their chances, eh?

Joe Hart - GOALIE

(Birmingham City)

Large-headed, bendy-limbed man who was once widely considered England's bright new hope between the sticks. Until Man City dropped him for Shay Given...

2010 CHANCES: 40% A great season for loan club Birmingam City will definitely put him in the reckoning, especially with most goalie spots up for grabs...

Nedum Onuoha - FULL BACK

(Manchester City)

Very impressive at U-21 level and pushing Man City's multi-million new recruits for a regular starting berth. Great name, too.

2010 CHANCES: 55% Okay, so he's traditionally a centre-back, but he's also a pretty decent right-back, and with Glen Johnson's occasional harebrained gallops, that's a problem position for England. Versatility and a good season could actually see Onuuuuuha stroll into the squad next summer.

Gary Cahill - CENTRE BACK

(Bolton Wanderers)

Snuck into a couple of England squads through injuries to Rio and Terry. Offers as much threat up front as Bolton's current batch of strikers.

2010 CHANCES: 50% Probably millimetres ahead of Shawcross, Onouha, Micah Richards and Michael Turner as the next central defender likely to bash down Capello's iron-plated door.

Ryan Shawcross - CENTRE BACK

(Stoke City)

Fearless centre back who nods in loads of goals, courtesy of Rory Delap's rocket launched throw-ins. Under the wrong light, he does look a bit like a pig, though. Not that that's a bad thing...

2010 CHANCES: 45% Could push Lescott and is a potentical cap-in-waiting...

Kieran Gibbs - FULL BACK

(Arsenal)

The new Ashley Cole apparently...

2010 CHANCES: 30% There's definitely a vacancy for a reserve left-back in the England squad, provided he can muster enough Premiership appearances and continue to impress...

Jack Wilshere - MIDFIELD

(Arsenal)

Leg-knotting attack-minded midfield prodigy, who had fans creaming themselves following recent U-21 bow.

2010 CHANCES: 25% Could be 2010's Walcott (i.e. pointless unused sub), but needs to establish himself at L'Arsenal first, and at just 17, this WC probably comes too early...

Lee Cattermole - MIDFIELD

(Sunderland)

Tenacious big-money coup for Sunderland. Shaved bonce makes him look really hard which will definitely put the sh*ts up flair-y South Americans.

2010 CHANCES: 20% Could be a long-term replacement for Gareth Barry in the defensive midfield role. But not yet. Oh no.

Mark Noble - MIDFIELD

(West Ham)

All-round, teeth-gnashing midfield dynamo who likes to get stuck in, and has a few tricks up his sleeves.

2010 CHANCES: 15% Ex-U21 skipper and highly rated by fellow pros, but most West Ham fans will stress he's a 'good player' but no more...

Jack Rodwell - MIDFIELD

(Everton)

Silky-skilled midfield upstart, and Everton's golden-est wonderboy since Rooney...

2010 CHANCES: 10% He's only just out of nappies.

Gabriel Agbonlahor - STRIKER

(Aston Villa)

Pacey, young frontman who's oozed his way into a couple of previous squads, before forgetting how to score.

2010 CHANCES: 20% Needs to score regularly and improve his composure in front of goal.

Darren Bent - STRIKER

(Sunderland)

Prolific Premiership goal-banger, despite Spurs fans (and Redknapp) claiming he's a bit of a donkey. More suited to the long ball game and pegging it behind defences.

2010 CHANCES: 60% - England squad is currently short on goalscorers, and he's enjoyed a rosy start at Sunderland. Must fancy his chances.
