Record British Transfer Fees
British Transfer Records

With the season over, the cheque books come out. Before the spending frenzy begins we look back at the record-breaking transfers from years gone by.

It's been said before but we'll say it again. Steve Daley? Nearly one and a half million quid back in 1979? Surely some mistake? What is clear looking over the record breaking British transfer fees of years gone by is that most of the players were at the top of their game and worth a punt - albeit an almightily huge punt - when the deal went down. And everything has changed. When John Charles went to Juventus from Leeds in 1957 the average annual wage in the UK was £600, and the average house price £2,300. Taking that into account you can see that . . . oh, sod it: footballers today are paid a grotesque amount of money in comparison to almost anybody on Earth, anywhere, at any point in the history of mankind.
