If there was any doubt at all that Lionel Messi was the star of the show in Rome during the Champions League finale, even the ad break comfirmed it.
Starring alongside European football legend Zinedine Zidane, Adidas' new commercial sees Messi getting the ‘spark’ in the back streets of Buenos Aires after an impromptu lorry accident releases some “strange alchemy” all over the little fella.
Fast forward a decade or so and the grown-up (but still dead small) Messi, with the aid of his new F50i boots (which he debuted in the final) is unleashing said alchemic ‘spark’ in front of a capacity stadium, beating a hoard of opposition players and scoring an impudent, Maradona-esque flick with the outside of his left boot.
A hooded, amused Zidane looks on impressed from the tunnel.
The new boot, available in a right lairy cyan and black, is made from a new material Adidas’s marketing bods are calling “SprintSkin” which allegedly improves touch and definitely reduces weight. It’s thinner, lighter and faster than its F50 predecessors and ‘sticky print’ has been introduced across the kicking sweetspot for better contact.
Messi said: “I’ve never felt so good in new football boots. The extremely thin shell, with its fantastic colour and style, allows me to play to my full potential on the pitch. Perfect contact with the ball is essential for me.”
Let’s hope he doesn’t wear them against us in the World cup next year, eh...
