Geordie Downfall
Newcastle’s Season in Numbers

We're not anti-Geordie by any means, but we haven't had enough of reading about their farcical Premier League decline yet. So we compiled this numerically informant list. And here it is...

18 - number of Premier League games lost

25 - number of Premier League goals scored between their six recognised strikers (Michael Owen, Obafemi Martins, Mark Viduka, Andy Carroll, Shola Ameobi, Peter Lovenkrands)

12 - number of times Kevin Nolan has been booked this season

10.3 million - amount Newcastle paid for Fabricio Coloccini from Deportivo

96 - number of points gained by Newcastle when they won the old first division in 1991/92 season

59 - number of shots Obafemi Martin had against goal. He scored only 8.

2 - number of clean sheets kept by Steve Harper (Shay Given had kept 5)

4 – number of managers this season

62 - age of Joe Kinnear when he took over from Kevin Keegan

52 - number of time Joe Kinnear swore at journalists in his first press conference

12 - number of times Newcastle have failed to hit the net during games this season

1 - number of games won when the team went behind

926,244 - people who have been to St James’ Park this season

48,749 - average attendance at St James’ Park this season

7,500 - number of fans that turned up to watch an open training session organised by Alan Shearer

15 – no. of players reportedly on 50k or more contracts (the brunt of which, apparently, are not affected by pesky relegation clauses)

12 - the amount in millions Newcastle sold James Milner to Aston Villa

200 - the amount in millions that Zabeel Investments offered to buy Newcastle off Mike Ashley. He turned it down, asking for £481 million

1 - number of goals scored by Joey Barton. A penalty

77 - number of minutes Joey Barton lasted before being sent off in his return game after injury against Liverpool in May

30 – yards out Gareth Barry’s wayward strike deflects off the desperately unlucky (and out-of-position) Damien Duff and into Steve Harper’s net to send the Geordies packin

57 – the “chosen one’s” first decisive move of the final day. He brings on the unfit Jose Enrique

34 – the number of points Newcastle went down with

16 - years spent in top-flight
