MAXIM: First things first, what are the origins of the name?
RATTUS: There’s no real reason, it’s the Latin name for the type of rat which spread the Bubonic Plague (with the help of their fleas). I’ve always liked a good plague. A rat pissed on me once but that’s a whole other story.
MAXIM: Lovely! You started DJing in the early 2000’s, DJing with live HipHop bands, what inspired the transition from that to playing solo DJ sets?
RATTUS: I wanted to play more club orientated music it felt like you could only go so far with Hip-hop in this country at the time. It was a very small and quite stagnant scene, Grime and Dubstep on the other hand were exciting underground scenes. It felt like there was much more scope to experiment in them.
MAXIM: What were the deciding factors for choosing the mash up style of DJ'ing, and mash up covers a lot of genres, how many tunes do you like to normally fit in a set?
RATTUS: As I started DJ'ing more in clubs it was obvious that peoples' tastes were changing the internet had changed music culture and people were quickly bored of one genre. As I'd always had a wide and varied taste in music it made sense to add as much different music in my sets as possible. On average I'll get through about 60-70 tracks in an hour set I try to constantly have a mix on the go.
MAXIM: You’re a resident DJ for one of London’s biggest underground promoters, ‘Urban Nerds’, you play clubs and festivals throughout Europe, what’s next for Rattus Rattus?
RATTUS: I'm now concentrating on producing music. It's important to keep challenging myself so it's the next logical step. I've got a couple of remixes coming out soon and hope to have something solo ready by the end of the year.
