There’s been plenty of comedies about awkward teenagers,
what is it that makes The Inbetweeners so special?
The fact it’s set in a school is one of the reasons, because
everyone’s been there so it’s easier to relate to. Kids that are at school at the
moment can relate to it. But so can people who were there 10, 20 or 30 years
ago.
When it was first written, The Inbetweeners was going to be
set in the 80s, then they decided to set it in the modern day. I think no
matter what era they'd decided set it in, people would still relate to it. Take four
normal 16-year-old lads from any generation and they won’t be talking about
politics, they’ll be worrying about getting laid and watching porn.
It’s true. No-one’s born cool are they? We all talk shit and we all experience
those crushing embarrassments of youth.
Yes, and it’s typical of the British to laugh at people. And
there’s plenty of opportunity to laugh at us in The Inbetweeners.
Who is most like their character?
This is a close one, but I’ll go for Simon Bird (Will). He
just plays a heightened version of himself. But he does it well. He’s a very
talented guy and a very funny guy.
In your opinion, who is the coolest character?
The point is that none of them are cool, whatsoever. Neil is the most oblivious to
everything, and less bothered by everything, so if that’s your definition of
cool, then possibly him. Jay tries so hard to be cool, it’s just silly. Simon
is constantly worried about everything. And Will is far too geeky to ever be
described as cool. So, yeah, I think I’d have to go for Neil. Maybe I’m a
little bit biased, but there you go.
If Neil was on Mastermind, which we know is doubtful, what
would be his specialist subject?
Pro Evolution Soccer.
If Neil had to choose one thing: PORN or LAGER, which one
would he pick?
Porn.
Your character seems to spend a lot more time naked than the
rest of the boys? Is this is a perk of the job or a downside?
Considering what my skinny body looks like, I think it’s a
downer! Joe Thomas, who plays Simon, has to have his clothes off a bit more
than me I think, so between the two of us it’s quite dire.
You don’t send the girls on set wild then?
I don’t think “wild” is the rtight word. When girls see me
with my top off, they just want to feed me up a bit.
What was the most embarrassing scene that you’ve been a part
of?
Walking around Thorpe Park in a pair of Speedos was by far
the most embarrassing. It was much more embarrassing than getting naked. That
was just in front of the lads and the crew, which is bad enough – it was a
professional environment, well, as professional as those people can be – but at
Thorpe Park I was just this random weirdo wearing his pants. It was the first
series, so no-one knew who we were. I was just a berk in a pair of Speedos, it
was fucking horrible.
“Clunge” is now part of the common vernacular for idiots like us. What are your favourite phrases
from the show?
“Bus wankers” was pretty good. “Bumder” is pretty funny,
too. And saying “friends” in a high-pitched, whiny voice was good,
too. I liked that one. Very basic, and very annoying.
What does the future hold for Neil?
Oh mate, I ain’t got a clue! He’ll probably end up being a
Community Police Officer or something like that. Someone could commit a heinous
crime about 3 metres in front of him though, and he wouldn’t notice. Which
probably isn’t a good thing.
Will we ever find out if Neil’s dad really is gay?
He’s not gay! He’s just misunderstood…

Army of Two: The 40th Day is the sequel to Army of Two. The
people behind it (EA) asked Blake to be a part of the viral campaign in order to
publicise it. The viral is funny (and viewable below). Blake likes the game
too. He spoke very highly of it.
