BMW GINA
Shape Shifter

Witness the groundbreaking new GINA concept from BMW – a work of automotive artistry that will morph at the touch of a button

BMW Gina concept

Two-seater roadsters are usually lambasted as ‘hairdressers’ cars’ – and with good reason. BMW’s next-generation Z4 GINA1 concept is the exception though. Not only does it look 10 times as aggressive as its peers, it’s loaded with groundbreaking trickery too; most obviously a complete fabric-like skin.

The entire shell is covered in a stretched waterproof material that can mould itself to suit different environments at the push of a button2. The specially developed fabric is supported by metal wire structures with attached electro-hydraulics that stretch in different directions to open, close and change the contours of the vehicle to enhance practicality, performance and looks3.

It’s doubtful we’ll see the concept (or technology) in production any time soon but it’s crazy nevertheless.

BONNET

A split in the bonnet surgically opens up from the centre outwards to reveal filler caps for the engine oil, cooling and washer tanks; allowing the driver easy access to the essential servicing points.

SPOILER

At speed, a boot spoiler automatically rises beneath the fabric to increase downforce5.

LIGHTS

Both the head and tail lights remain hidden until activated, where the fabric will peel open to reveal both front lamps (almost like eyes) and rear units will illuminate from behind the fabric.

DOORS

The Lamborghini-style4 doors swing both outwards and upwards, creating a defined bulk of folded material that completely disappears when closed.

INTERIOR

The seats, headrests, steering wheel and gauges automatically move into position if and when the driver sits in the vehicle. The seats adjust to previously stored driver/passenger data. Swish.
