Are Men More Cultured Than Women?
It's official - we are!

The largest and most in-depth research into Brits’ film habits has been commissioned by Film3Sixty, with over 18,831 people questioned across the country and what have we found - women like big guns…

The survey itself is the single largest piece of consumer research in the UK and results have highlighted consumer attitudes towards film releases, home entertainment, social media and emerging technologies.

The survey broke film viewers down into four categories, Blockbuster Only, Blockbuster Mainly, Indie Only and Indie Mainly. And from this we were able to learn just how different men and women really are.

While the results found highlighted a typical divide between men and women, with men preferring Sci Fi and Thrillers while women opted for Rom Coms and Dramas, we also found that men are in fact more cultured than women.

Men:

  • Make up 55% of the indie film fanbase.
  • More likely to say the Director is important when choosing a film.
  • Take their time when selecting a film.
  • Like expert advice and rate a professional critic over their friend’s opinions.
  • More relaxed about money and go the cinema 33% more than women.
  • 46% openly admit to enjoying a good Rom Com!

Women:

  • Make up the majority of Blockbuster film fans.
  • More impulsive and can make up their mind immediately about which film to watch.
  • Less likely to take into account a professional critic.
  • More likely to think the lead Actor/Actress is important when choosing a film.

So when your supposedly better half dismisses your cultural prowess and disagrees with your film choice just give her 20 quid to go see Twilight with her mates so you can sit back and enjoy watching Drive for the umpteenth time... or Bridesmaids depending on which statistic you fall under.

Here are some more factoids derived from the survey, useful for some pub talk ammunition!

  • Men go to the cinema 33% more than women.
  • Men favour Sci Fis (17%) and Thrillers (15%), Women like Rom Coms (19%) and Dramas (15%).
  • Men are over 3 times more likely than Women to say Science Fiction is their favourite genre.
  • Women are over 6 times more likely than Men to say Rom Coms are their favourite genre.
  • 46% of men admit to enjoying a good Romantic Comedy!!
  • Women are 42% more likely to say the lead Actor/Actress is important when choosing a film.
  • Men are 54% more likely to say the Director is important when choosing a film.
  • Women are more impulsive/Men like to take their time - 66% of women say they make up their mind immediately about a film, compared to 57% of men.
  • Men like expert advice - 38% of men would rate the opinion of a professional critic over that of their friends, compared to 23% of women.
  • Men are more relaxed about money than women - 36% of men think cinema is good value for money, compared to 31% of women.

So yes, we might be crap at arguments, but we know what we're talking about when it comes to movies. No offence ladies, but we'll choose what we're watching next time we have a night in!
