Born on June 16, 1971, Tupac (known by his stage name 2Pac) was an American rapper and promising actor, having a successful career in both fields. To date, he has sold over 75 million albums making him one of the best selling artists in the world.
Most of 2Pacs songs were about growing up, with the violence and hardships faced in the ghettos of the time. He also spoke about racism, problems in society and conflicts with other rappers during the East Coast-West Coast rivalry that also saw the death of fellow rapper Biggie Smalls.
2Pac was no stranger to hardships in his later life either, after being indicted on charges of sexual assault and sentenced to one-and-a-half to four-and-a-half years in prison.
On this day in 1996, 2Pac was leaving the MGM Grand in Las Vegas after attending a boxing match. Suge Knight was driving himself and 2Pac as part of a convoy on their way to a party, and upon stopping at a red light, a white Cadillac pulled up alongside them and opened fire. Shakur was hit in his chest, pelvis, his right hand and thigh.
2Pac was taken to the University Medical Center, where he was resuscitated and had multiple surgeries over the space of six days. He eventually died of internal bleeding and cardiac arrest on September 13, 1996. He was cremated, with some of his ashes being mixed with marijuana and smoked by members of Outlawz.
