On this day in 1975, Jimmy Hoffa vanished in one of America’s biggest mysteries!
You may have heard of the legend of Jimmy Hoffa in anything from Ace Ventura to that episode of Mythbusters where they checked the Giants’ (NFL team) stadium for his remains.
The man himself was an American labour union leader and author, mostly involved with organising the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union, which still exists today and represents blue-collar and professional workers in both the public and private sector.
He was far from being a good boy though, having been convicted of jury tampering, attempted bribery, and fraud in 1964, then was imprisoned in 1967, finally being sentenced to 13 years, after exhausting the appeal process. As part of a pardon agreement with then-president Richard Nixon, he finally resigned presidency of the union in late 1971.
On the day of his disappearance, Hoffa was in the car park of the Machus Red Fox Restaurant in Bloomfield Township, a suburb of Detroit, at around 2.45pm under the impression he was to meet with two Mafia leaders—Anthony Giacolone and Anthony Provenzano.
After failing to return home, his wife called the police to report him missing. Hoffa’s car was found at the restaurant, but there was no sign of Jimmy himself nor what had happened to him. For their part, Giacolone and Provenzano were each found not to have been in the vicinity of the restaurant that afternoon, and each of them denied that they had scheduled any meeting with Hoffa.
The most recent attempt to find Hoffa’s remains was a search conducted by the FBI at a farm in Milford Township, Michigan, acting on an anonymous tip off. Nothing was found.
We're all left wondering... Will he ever be?
