Ah, Hollywood. The
original Paranormal Activity movie was made on a microscopic budget, sat in the
system for two years and slowly rolled out to become the surprise blockbuster
hit of 2009. However, Paramount Pictures doesn’t want the story to end there,
and for the past few months, it’s been trying to put Paranormal Activity 2
together, with an October release date in mind.
The only problem is that
finding a director hasn’t been easy. It originally recruited Kevin Greutert,
the editor of the first five Saw movies and the director of the sixth.
Lionsgate, the studio behind Saw, objected to this, and instead used the terms
of his contract to insist that Greutert direct this Halloween’s Saw 3D instead.
He’s currently working on that, and not looking too happy about it, we’d wager.
Last week, it was reported
that the shortlist of directors for Paranormal Activity 2 was actually more
promising than we suspect the material deserves. The most promising was Brian
De Palma, the very same man who made Carrie, Carlito’s Way, Scarface and The
Untouchables. Also on there was Greg McLean (Wolf Creek) and Brad Anderson
(Transsiberian).
While no decision though
has yet been made over who will be wielding the megaphone – and heck, a
decision needs to be made fast to hit the very, very tight deadline – the star
of the original film, Micah Sloat, has been defending the film. He told MTV on
the way into the Independent Spirit Awards last weekend that, “I'm very excited
for the project, it's really cool, it's gonna be really interesting and it's
not gonna suck, which most horror sequels ... would. This is gonna be good”.
We don’t believe him.
