It was supposed to be a night about James Cameron, a cast of blue people, and the movie that’s taken more than the annual spend of many small countries at the box office. But as it turned out, Avatar had to contend with technical awards at the 2010 Academy Awards, the big gongs instead veering in the direction of Cameron’s ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow.
Her movie, The Hurt Locker, took six Oscars to Avatar’s three, crucially including Best Picture and Best Director. Bigelow becomes the first female winner of Best Director in the history of the awards.
It was, ultimately, a predictable night, with Christoph Waltz taking home gold for his superb turn in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, and Jeff Bridges needing to find room on his mantelpiece for a Best Actor prize for Crazy Heart. These had all been predicted long in advance, and Oscar didn’t disappoint, rarely straying at all from the script.
Still, Sandra Bullock also managed to make history by becoming the first actress to win Best Actress at the Oscars (for The Blind Side) and Worst Actress at the Razzies (for All About Steve) in the same weekend. But we’d wager hard cash that The Razzies was a far better ceremony to sit through than the Oscars…
