Aquascutum

Get the classic cut of a crimean war general, without the trenchfoot!

Back in 1851 John Emary opened a small, high-quality tailor’s shop on Regent Street. Two years later he’d perfected his rain-repellent cloth. He joined the Latin words, ‘aqua’ (for ‘water’) and ‘scutum’ (for ‘shield’) and the brand was born.

British soldiers were equipped with Aquascutum’s coats during the Crimean War. The pockets were deep enough to carry a bottle of whisky to down for Dutch courage.

Aquascutum has been trading from the same site, at 100 Regent Street, for over 100 years.

Its classics have been updated for the spring main line, including a belted trenchcoat with metal in the fabric. It’s the second season of the high-end Aquascutum Collection, with some killer catwalk cuts.

A hooded white jacket with vivid checked lining is inspired by military style, but is also perfect for terrace manoeuvres. The pieces are so limited that only 10 of each have been made. Get down to Browns or Harrods to join a very elite club.
