Cabourn’s latest limited edition is inspired by 50s Formula 1 racing. Of particular influence is Mike Hawthorn – the first British driver to win the Formula 1 World Championship in a Ferrari, in 1958.
‘He was a very stylish man,’ Cabourn says of Hawthorn. ‘He came from an era when the drivers did 170mph in open-top cars, dressed like country gentlemen’
The ‘James Dean of the racing circuit’, Hawthorn wore combos like tweed jackets with a Harrington jacket underneath, white shirt and dickie bow and overall pants.
Because the collection is so true to the originals, the prices reflect the work and research that’s gone into the garments – though at £1,200 for a sheepskin, it might be heading out of Motty’s budget.
To give the range a wider appeal, Cabourn has also designed limited-edition T-shirts which come in petrol cans and sweats packed in metal tool kits.
