This is the shoe that really introduced fashionistas to the world of trainers. With its acid flashes, visible air bubbles and hi-tech mesh panels, this shoe offers attractive looks on top of supreme comfort.
15 - Nike Blazer Hi-tops - £58.93 (at ASOS)
While it may not be big on technology, this basketball shoe from 1972 is still considered by many the ideal Nike shoe. Not only does it perfectly display the big fat swoosh, it comes in leather, canvas and suede versions.
16 - Vans Classic Slip On - £33
First released in 1973, when devotees could customise their pair by selecting the colour and fabric. For many, though, the style will be forever associated with Sean Penn’s surfer dude in the 1982 film Fast Times At Ridgemont High.

A running shoe that was first launched in 1988, and then promptly shelved. It was reissued in 1997 and has remained popular ever since. It’s extremely versatile in terms of colour and materials used.

Over the years, Vans has managed to perfect the canvas deck shoe style. The Authentic is a late 1960s design that originally carried the number 44 on its back heel and with its clean, simple, every-day styling it remains a classic.

A late 1970s tennis shoe that soon became a regular sight on Britain’s terraces, its retro styling appealing to the football casuals. It comes in a range of colours but this distinctive yellow sole remains popular.
20 - Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 - £60
Launched in 1966, this lightweight athletic shoe with the tiger stripes has been released in a multitude of colourways over the years. Most notably this is the trainer worn by Bruce Lee in his 1978 film Game Of Death.
