Sole Survivors - Part 1
The definitive Top 20

We couldn't decide on a Top 10 so here's a list of the Top 20 classic sneakers instead

The Criteria

He asked five experts to tell us which trainer styles have made the biggest impact on sneaker culture. But only shoes that had been nominated by at least two panel members made it into our Top 20. We’re picky like that.

The Panel

Who? Michael Armstrong
Role Footwear buying director for JD Sports.
Serious collector or avid fan? Less of a collector, more of an accumulator.
How many in your collection? Too many to be arsed to count.

Who? Ghassan Hodieb
Role Buying director for Office Holdings (Offspring, Office, Poste).
Serious collector or avid fan? I’d never buy anything I wouldn’t wear just to build a collection.
How many in your collection? Around 350-400, but this tends to fluctuate as I give stuff away over time.

Who? Daniel Mitchell
Role Footwear buyer for www.oki-ni.com for the past two years.
Serious collector or avid fan? Avid fan.
How many in your collection? Currently about 300 or so pairs.

Who? Lee Grace
Role General merchandise manager for Urban Outfitters Europe.
Serious collector or avid fan? More like an avid fan to be honest.
How many in your collection? Well over the 35 mark at the last count.

Who? CT Crew better known as www.crookedtongues.com.
Experience The crew behind one of the best sources of vintage ‘sneakers’.
Serious collector or avid fan? That depends on your definition of serious. How many in your collection? Each of us would probably be in the hundreds.

1 - Adidas Superstars - £55

Immortalised by Run DMC both on stage and in their lyrics, this old skool trainer has its roots firmly entrenched in the burgeoning New York hip-hop scene of the 1970s and early 1980s. You’ve got a pair already, right?

2 - Adidas Stan Smith - £60

This all-leather tennis shoe actually started life in 1964 as the pro model of another tennis star, Robert Haillet. It was slightly modified when Stan Smith became the new face in the 1970s, and has been around ever since.

3 - Converse Chuck Taylor All Star - £35

No introduction needed here. A combination of its sturdy but lightweight rubber-toed construction and the wild array of colours has ensured this iconic basketball shoe wardrobe-staple status since its release, in 1917.

4 - Nike Air Force 1 - £70

The most iconic Nike shoe of the 1980s. When the AF1 first launched it brought cutting-edge, gas technology to the courts for the first time and quickly became the sneaker of choice for the new hip-hop generation.

5 - Nike Air MAX1 - £85

Considered revolutionary when introduced in 1987 not because it was the first trainer to make use of Nike’s air bubble suspension, but because it was the first trainer to feature a window in the sole. Just so you know.

6 - Adidas gazelle - £55

An essential part of the 80s casual army’s uniform, this 1960s athletic running shoe – with its streamlined wedge shape, simple styling and flat sole – still has iconic appeal, and looks set to maintain its stronghold on the terraces.

7 - Adidas ZX 700 - £60

An 80s running shoe that still sells in big numbers today. Its continued popularity is down in no small part to the constant updating of colours and materials. Much coveted, it’s still sought-after by collectors and fans alike.

8 - Nike Cortez Flywire - £60

Formerly known as the Tiger Corsair, it was renamed the Cortez in ’72 after the partnership between Nike (then know as Ribbon Sports) and Onitsuka Tiger broke down. There’s still controversy over who owns the design.

9 - Nike Dunk - £85

Easily one of the most accessible and highly collectable Nike shoes. With a raft of colours both in high and low tops, even though it’s now 24 years old, this shoe continues to dominate UK street culture.

10 - Puma Clyde - £60

The Walter ‘Clyde’ Frazier signature basketball shoe was first released in 1968. It proved to be an instant classic and is still highly sought after – thanks to a simple shape that gives every pair a fresh and timeless appeal.
