Pro Evolution Soccer 3 Rating: Publisher: Konami
In the competitive world of PlayStation football, there is FIFA and there is Pro Evolution, the former lapped up by the masses and the latter worshipped by the purists. In various guises, the Pro Evo series has reigned supreme for years, and never more so than now, as this is a genuine landmark game. Pro Evolution 2 was easily the most enduring game of last year, and the fact that it is now rendered redundant speaks volumes for this incarnation, which massively advances the series, and indeed the genre.
If we're preaching to the converted, you need to know that the animation has been improved hugely, making for a far more fluid experience, with the ball acting even more realistically, leading to some breathless goalmouth scrambles. The advantage rule has been introduced and it includes the handball rule, making this the closest you'll get to playing football without leaving the house. Any game that can cause you to drop the joypad and run into the kitchen to celebrate a goal has to be worth a look.
Football is the perfect sport for a video game, and this is a near-perfect rendition of it. The Japanese development of this greatest-ever football game is testament to their scientific approach, analysing the action and recreating it in emphatic detail. If you have any interest in either football or video games (or just can't be arsed to go down the park for the real thing), you need to own PES3. This is football.
