Midnight Club II

Rating:
Publisher: (Rockstar Games)
Rockstar Games may be better known for their censor-baiting Grand Theft Auto series, but they also have a sideline in more orthodox automotive shenanigans, as evidenced in this impressive sequel. Illegal street racing is the order of the day, although it is a good deal more glamorous than tearing round Southend in your Honda Civic. Los Angeles, Paris and Tokyo provide the settings, and the vehicles are also a cut above the average boy racer mobile, with a mix of absurdly stylised, fictional sports cars on offer. And for those who like to straddle the saddle, there are even a few beefed-up bikes thrown in for good measure.
As is becoming the trend with racing games, there is a lotmore than simply your opponents to contend with, as each city is teeming with ambient traffic - the majority of which is not particularly accommodating to unauthorised street races. If you've been round Paris in a taxi, you'll know what to expect, and the other cities also offer a variety of hazards, not least from pedestrians, although they do make some attempt to avoid becoming roadkill.
With a host of different game modes, there's plenty here to keep you (and your friends) busy, and the arcade leanings ensure that even the most cack-handed buffoon can get to grips with it quickly, despite the G-force speeds. Turn up the obligatory banging tunes and it's like being in a club at midnight. In Southend, even.
