Why Chris Lilley isn't a global superstar is anybody's guess. It's a world gone wrong when more people watch Friends than tune into the legend of Summer Heights High. True, in the UK we have only been drip fed it on BBC3 at odd hours on random days, and that says something about BBC3 and their take on comedy (I give you Horne and Corden). Lilley, (who has won awards in Australia) created Summer Heights High as a mockumentary series, dissecting the daily life at an Australian High School. Lilley plays all the key characters: the awesomely delinquent Jonah Takalua; the power-mad, hugely camp 'Director of Performing Arts' Mr G and the horribly insincere spoiled teenager Ja'mie King. There has only been one series, and while it has been repeated on BBC3, it remains staunchly cult. HBO have bought it up for the States which bodes well. Lilley is also the brains behind We Can Be Heroes: Finding The Australian Of The Year – another slice of spoof hilarity. Your best bet is to You Tube both or better still invest in the DVD. And take with you the wise words of Jonah: “I’m not dumb. I’m just choosing not to be smart at the moment.”
