Looking for a proper gaming headset? Don't want to throw wads of cash at something sub par? Look no more friends. The Mad Catz Tritton range of gaming headsets are here to save the day! ...and your wallet!

Starting off with the basics is the Tritton AX 120. Darren Richardson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mad Catz (and thoroughly top chap) had this to say; “We believe the TRITTON AX 120 represents an ideal entry into the world of professional gaming audio. Following our recently announced agreement with Microsoft to produce a range of licensed, co-branded audio headphones, we believe the TRITTON brand will go from strength-to-strength in 2011 and we’re delighted that gamers in multiple territories are now able to enjoy the value and quality offered by the TRITTON brand.” You know what? He couldn't be more right. We've experienced some pretty shoddy headphones at price points much higher than this one! What we have here is a lightweight, solid, stereo headset with a detachable, noise-cancelling mic. The in-line remote keeps you in control, while the earpads don't crush your ears, making it fine for extended use. With some amazingly clear bass and high notes, you won't find a better entry level headset for general and gaming usage.

Next up we have the Tritton AX 180, which delivers high-performance stereo gaming headsets designed specifically for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. With precision balanced speakers for rich, full stereo audio, the AX 180 has a host of features. Again, great value for money, with an advanced communication system utilising independant game and voice volume control for both Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network chat. All handled by the touch of a few buttons on the in-line remote. Offering tremendous sound quality, and the all important comfort factor (thankfully present yet again!), this is definitely an affordable headset bursting with features made with the customer in mind.

Following those two rather fantastic entries is no easy feat, but one that is quite confidently done by the Tritton AX 720. Utilising premium Dolby Headphone technology, the AX 720 puts you in the middle of a highly immersive 5.1 sound field. The discrete amplifier box allows up to two headsets to be driven AT THE SAME TIME. The box decodes the 5.1 sound signal from the console and puts it out through high-fidelity Neodymium drivers. Also featuring the detachable mic and in-line individual voice and game volume controls, the AX 720 is an absolute dream to use and wear. The AX 720 will take any optical audio connection you can throw at it, allowing you to hook up any video game console that supports it, also meaning that any device with an optical out can be decoded by the AX 720 amplifier! With more tech, comes more weight, but the AX 720 is still one of the most comfortable headsets we've ever had the pleasure of wearing. A definite purchase for anyone serious about their sound!

So, after all that, what could possibly be at the top of the pile? Let us tell you; it's the Tritton AX Pro! This headset is something else, to the point where it should probably have it's own entrance music. Different from the AX 720, these bad boys utilise no less than 8 precision-balanced speakers (4 for each of your lug holes), which accurately reproduces 5.1 surround-sound with no need for emulation. This is the REAL DEAL people! Inside each ear cup is a front, centre and rear speaker PLUS a subwoofer. You will be wearing a home cinema installation on your head. You'd think that would sacrifice the comfort level right? WRONG! The build quality and comfort level on these, and all of the Tritton headsets, is second to none. Again featuring the trademark in-line controls and detachable microphone, the AX Pro is top of the line stuff at an affordable price.
The bottom line is every single one of the Tritton range are fantastic, both in terms of value for money and quality. They are all well built, and look the absolute dogs when plugged in via the USB thanks to their glowing logo emblazoned on the sides. Although we're hard pushed to choose a favourite, the AX 720 probably just edges out in front overall, if only due to the fact that the Pro requires a seperate power source to power all it's features, and that it takes a little bit from all of the headsets across the range to combine into one neat little package. We're such fans of this range that all our gaming and DVD reviews are done using these very headsets.
