Our anti-Apple rants aside, why does the Xperia present such an alluring alternative to the iPhone?
Definitely gets the Maxim seal of approval
Well, let's start with the looks. In terms of size and weight, it's only slightly bigger than Apple's iPhone, but with a more robust and sleek appearance. It weighs roughly the same but feels tougher.
It comes equipped with an 8.1 megapixel camera, which produces crystal clear shots. There is a variety of different modes to ensure you take the best picture for that current situation, such as Night mode, Sport mode, and Portrait and Landscape options. You can also apply most of those filters and settings to the video option, which also records in an extremely high quality picture.
The menu is nice and easy to navigate, as is the store. The Facebook (for Android) and Youtube applications come as standard, and also work without hassle, allowing you to quicky and easily upload and share videos, pictures and update your status. Or Tweet, if that's your cup of Yorkshire.
As it's an Android phone, there are lots of features that require a Googlemail address, which as it's free to get one, should be of no problem.
For those of us who don't like to carry a phone AND an mp3 player, then the X10 also has those bases covered (thankfully, seeing as it IS from Sony Ericsson!), with a speakerphone built in and a standard 3.5mm jack input for your headphones.
Now, of course nothing is perfect, and literally the only issue we had is with the fully QWERTY keyboard and our fat fingers. It took some getting used to the (very intelligent) predictive text function and us picking the wrong word, or pressing the wrong letters, making for some entertaining text messages and emails.
Other than that, no problems at all. Very easy to get to grips with, nice call quality and very customisable (you can even make your own ringtones!). This definitely gets the Maxim seal of approval.
5/5 - Our iPhone is in the bin already.
