Distophia Distophia Rating: Record Label: Necessary Records
As the fat-arsed youth of our once great (musical) nation strive to become the next big (Robbie) thing via Pop Idols or whatever, these Brummie chaps have been creating something altogether better and far more listenable in the Midlands of late. Think Dinosaur Jr and My Bloody Valentine at their finest and you'll be off in the right direction.
From the leap around thrash that is 'San Diego Hair' through to the epic 'Open Glory' you get the feeling this is one of those rare classic first albums that propels a band onto greater things. And you'd be right.
Meshing melodies and thrashing chords comes naturally to them and it's no more apparent than on the just-released single, 'Joanne'. Following a gloriously noisy start wave after wave keeps coming. Just when you think it's totally stripped down, it's resurrected to slap you round some more. Birmingham is back with a bang. Top notch.
