Joy Zipper American Whip Rating: Record Label: (13 Amp)
Historically, "Honey, now we're married, lets form a band" does not bode well for a life of musical greatness. Just look at what happened to John and Yoko. Making beautiful music together may seem a good idea after four bottles of champagne at the wedding reception but, as anyone who has ever heard a record by Wings will testify, it isn't.
Joy Zipper are Vinny Casifo and Tabitha Tindale. The names alone sound like summer sun and the music doesn't disappoint. Imagine if The Breeders mated with Air and you'd be close to the beauty of their blissed-out, Long Island sound. American Whip is full of luscious vocals and trippy melodies, and with the production help of My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Sheilds, there's an accomplished feel. A spaced-out theme flows all the way through, but songs such as "Alzheimers" show there's a tinge of darkness at the edges of their sunbeams. They say relationships based on drugs are doomed to fail but surely that's better one based on sheep farming and veggie sausages, eh Paul?
