After LP-hopping from ethereal eeriness to platform-booted glam to quaint English folk, we were buggered if we knew what Goldfrapp would be turning up on their fifth album. And the answer is - electronic Casio drum roll please - spacesuited 'future' POP!
Our gravest sympathy goes out to the tour roadies, because judging by its melodious, cotton-wool sounds, they'll be forced into humping around synths the size of tanks. Goldfrapp, of course, has experimented with similar things on 'Black Cherry', but the melodies on 'Head First' are far more delicate, whimsical and 'SCHOOL DISCO'.
A couple of the tracks even recall Belinda Carlisle, Erasue and an end of days Abba that are actually cool to like. We never thought we'd be printing that and then giving an album 'four-stars'. Life is funny. Funny like clowns.
*WIN WIN WIN* We've got a few boxed copies of 'Head First' to give away! For your chance to win, email over your name and address to chaps@maxim.co.uk, stating 'GOLDFRAPP' in the subject head. We'll pick winners out at random. Entrants must be over 18 and live in the UK. Good luck!
