Elvis at 21: New York to Memphis
Chelsea's Proud opens with The King For freelance lensman Alfred Wertheimer, the phrases 'being in the right place at the right time' and 'falling on your feet' couldn't be more apt.
Back in the mid-'50s, record company RCA requested some promotional headshots of their recently acquired rising young star Elvis Pressley. Struggling photographer Wertheimer was recruited, and recognising something special to this soon-to-be 'King of Rock'n'Roll', went trigger happy on his camera.
The results were the most CANDID shots ever taken of one of the 20th century's most iconic icons. At the age of 21, Elvis stood on the brink of superstardom. Almost every subsequent shot would be ruthlessly controlled by record companies and management. But Wertheimer beat the deadline by seconds. His photos have since become legends in their own right.
A comprehensive selection of Wertheimer's Elvis archives are being exhibited at the newly-launching Chelsea's Proud Gallery (161 King's Road) from 18 November 2009 - 30 January 2010. Check them out. They are one of a kind. Like The Great Man himself!
