Yes, it's a film about men in leather skirts. Yes, it's chock full of up-its-own backside dialogue. And yes it wants to be Gladiator so badly it bleedin' hurts. But even with all this handicapping it, Troy is still a belter of bludgeoning blockbuster proportions.
When the Greek and Trojan hordes thunder into each other, hacking and slashing like crazy men, any viewer with a pulse is going to feel a hell of an adrenalin rush. Brad Pitt makes a thumpingly good Achilles (his battle with Hector is a corker), and the acting slack is picked up nicely by the likes of Peter O'Toole and Brian Cox. The big dumb Hollywood epic is back with a vengence.
