Wrapped up more tightly than the gimp in Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino's martial-arts masterpiece is being kept away from prying eyes until the very last minute. But we know the story. Gunned down on her wedding day by her former partners, top-flight assassin Uma Thurman emerges from a coma five years later and sets off on a blood-soaked trail of vengeance. Sadly, we won't see her brutal face-off with lead killer Bill (Kung Fu's David Carradine) until the second installment next year - the film's been split, Matrix-style, into two parts - but there's still more than enough action in part one.
Shown opposite is the scene where Uma - togged up in a yellow tracksuit as a homage to Bruce Lee's unfinished film Game Of Death - takes on a Chinese tea-house full of baddies, led by Lucy Liu, armed only with a samurai sword. Apparently, Tarantino insisted on a special type of fake blood for the arterial sprays... this is going to be good.
