Newly retired Warren Schmidt (Nicholson) fills his days by writing misery-filled letters to an orphan in Africa. However, it is only after his wife dies and he heads off on a road-trip to his daughter's wedding that he decides to do something with his life. It's a slow, meandering journey full of quirky characters and bizarre sub-plots, but Nicholson's awesome performance binds it all together admirably.
