THE ORPHAN *out at cinemas from Friday, 7 August*
Kids can be morbid little things can't they? Shove a creepy-faced little rotter into any horror film, and suddenly the scare factor is increased tenfold: The Shining twins, The Omen, The Grudge, Village Of The Damned, even the 'I see dead people' kid in Sixth Sense was sort of unsettling in his own unique way, and he wasn't even a ghost!
The latest movie to employ this well-worn but effective tactic is ORPHAN, which is best described as The Omen but with a female do-badder instead of a male one. When a young couple suffer a miscarriage and are plagued by nightmares, they decide to adopt a child from the local orphanage. Unfortunately, the nine-year-old girl they're strangely drawn to (an angelic little thing called Esther) turns out to be a mysterious little s**t who isn't very nice at all. Cue tons of finger-chewing, genuinely gruesome and NOT child-friendly horror!
