Bill Maher's film is going to make a lot of people very angry. One massive broadside attack on organised religion, he travels the globe meeting some of the more extreme (and often repulsive) examples of religious fanatics. On the way he gets thrown out of the Vatican, offends Jews, Muslims and Christians in Jerusalem, exposes con men preachers claiming to be the second coming, hangs out with militant Islamic hip-hop artists and hugs 'reformed homosexuals' who claim to have been able to 'pray the gay away'.
Since religious belief versus atheism is an argument neither side can win, Maher has ingeniously done away with the even-handed approach and just gone straight for the jugular. And with director Larry Charles (who was responsible for Borat and Curb Your Enthusiasm) onboard, the result is merciless but utterly hilarious.
