WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
McQueen plays a San Francisco cop [Bullitt] assigned to protect a witness in a Mafia trial. However, everything that can go wrong does, courtesy of a meddling senator, persistent mobster hitmen and little time to put everything right. Result? A relentless barrage of tension and excitement.
COOL FACTOR:
With that Ford Mustang car chase scene, the cool backdrop of San Francisco and McQueen exuding ice-coolness from every pore, this is surely one of the best bloke’s films ever made.
SCENE:
The first and still best of all the car chases!
TRIVIA!
• In honor of the Mustang in the film, Ford produced a limited edition 2001 "Mustang Bullitt GT", which took styling cues from the '68 movie car and even copied its exhaust note. (both the car's engine and transmission were overdubbed recordings of a Ford GT40).
• Stuntman Bud Ekins, who drives the Mustang in the famous car chase also did the motorcycle jump for Steve McQueen in ‘The Great Escape’ (1963).
